‘I used to try to grow my own hair, bleach it, and torture it until it became so brittle. I finally thought, ‘Why am I going through all this? Why don’t I just wear wigs?’ That way, I never have a bad hair day. I always have a good hair day!’
As a teenager, Parton dreamed of one day being able to afford a wig, a wish she recalls in her book Songteller: My Life in Lyrics. At the time, she never imagined she would become successful enough to own as many wigs as she wanted.
In the book, she writes:
‘I always paid attention to hair. Whenever a new hairstyle became trendy, I was the first to try it. When I could finally afford hairpieces and wigs, I wanted them immediately. My hair never really behaved anyway, so wigs became part of my identity.’
According to Mirror, Parton even employs a dedicated stylist to care for her extensive collection of custom-made wigs. Thanks to years of practice, she can now do her makeup, get dressed, and put on a wig in less than 15 minutes.
Recently, however, the country legend surprised everyone by posting a rare black-and-white photo on Instagram. The image, believed to have been taken around 1965,
shows a 19-year-old Dolly standing at a microphone shortly after signing her first record deal with Monument Records. In the photo, she wears her natural, shoulder-length blonde hair, softly framing her face — a striking contrast to her famously extravagant styles.
She captioned the photo simply:
‘Where the magic happens.’
Since sharing the image, more than 220,000 people have reacted. Fans were stunned to see their favorite star in such a natural, understated look.
