Curious Stories for Curious Minds

At an age when many are watching their children grow up, this 42-year-old woman has just welcomed her 20th baby.

When people talk about big families, the Radfords are in a league of their own. Widely known as the largest family in Great Britain, Sue and Noel Radford have welcomed many children over the years. But now, Sue says she’s finally reached her finish line. Baby Archie, she insists, is the last addition to their extraordinary household.

Sue admits the decision feels strange. After all, having babies has been a constant in her life for decades. Still, she says it’s time to slow down and enjoy what they’ve built. She and her 46-year-old husband Noel are happy, content, and ready for a little rest after years of nappies, night feeds, and school runs.

Archie arrived a bit earlier than expected, but thankfully his premature birth didn’t affect his health. Sue even joked that the hospital staff treated her like an old friend. With so many deliveries behind her, she’s become a familiar face in the maternity ward.

The Radford family now includes 10 boys and 9 girls. Their eldest child, Chris, is 28, while the youngest before Archie, little Phoebe, is just one year old. Archie is the 11th boy in the family, and Sue says the number of children now feels “just right.”

The family story doesn’t stop there. Their daughter Sophie is already a mother of three, which makes Sue and Noel proud grandparents as well as full-time parents. It’s a household where generations overlap and life is never quiet.

Sue’s journey into motherhood began early. She gave birth to her first child at just 14 years old. Despite her young age, she says she was never afraid and deeply loved her son from the very beginning. She later married Noel officially once she was old enough, and together they continued to grow their family far beyond what they initially imagined.

Noel laughs when he recalls their original plan. At first, they wanted just three children. Then they decided that the bigger the family, the better. Today, they all live together in a massive 10-room house, and getting everyone from place to place requires a minibus rather than a car.

The couple once thought they’d stop after Sue’s ninth pregnancy, but that plan didn’t last long. Time and again, they changed their minds and welcomed another baby into the fold. This time, though, Sue says it truly feels final.

According to her, the children were over the moon when Archie arrived. Each sibling wanted to cuddle and greet the newest member of the family, proving once again that in the Radford home, love is just as abundant as people.

One thing is certain: even if Archie really is the last, life in Britain’s biggest family will never be anything less than full.
