In China’s ancient desert city of Dunhuang, a luxury public restroom has unexpectedly become one of the area’s most talked-about tourist attractions.
Located near the city’s famous night market, the so-called “five-star public toilet” is drawing huge crowds of curious visitors during the Labor Day holiday season.

Many tourists are not even stopping by to use the facility. Instead, they are coming specifically to take photos and videos of the unusual location.
The modern glass building looks more like a stylish office complex than a public restroom. Inside, visitors are greeted with elegant décor inspired by the culture of Dunhuang and the nearby Mogao Caves. The walls feature artistic murals, decorative greenery, soft lighting, and even aromatherapy systems designed to create a relaxing atmosphere.

The facility also includes seating areas, a coffee machine, luggage storage on the upper floor, accessible restrooms, and rooms for parents with babies. What began as a renovation project has now become an unexpected social media sensation.
Photos and videos of the location quickly spread across Chinese social platforms after the restroom opened last year. A new online trend even appeared, with tourists posing outside the building while holding rolls of toilet paper as a humorous photo prop.

Some travelers admitted they added the restroom to their travel itinerary on purpose. One visitor reportedly joked online, “I came to Dunhuang mainly for this toilet.”

The surprising attraction highlights how modern design and social media can transform even an ordinary public facility into a viral tourist hotspot.
