A massive hole in a California lake continues to amaze visitors from around the world, and when water levels rise high enough, the spectacle becomes even more incredible.
Located at Lake Berryessa in Napa County, California, the famous “Glory Hole” spillway is one of the most unusual engineering structures in the United States. During periods of heavy rainfall, the giant circular opening transforms into what appears to be a giant whirlpool, drawing water down into a huge underground tunnel.

The impressive spillway measures approximately 72 feet (22 meters) across at the surface. When the lake reaches its maximum capacity, excess water begins flowing into the opening and travels through a massive concrete tunnel beneath the lake.
The structure was designed as a safety overflow system for Monticello Dam. Engineers created the unique design because the narrow canyon surrounding the dam left little room for a traditional spillway. Instead, they built a giant funnel-shaped tunnel capable of safely carrying excess water away from the reservoir.
As water rushes downward, the tunnel gradually narrows from about 72 feet to 28 feet in diameter while dropping more than 200 feet. The water is then released into Putah Creek on the opposite side of the dam.
The spillway was last seen operating dramatically after periods of intense rainfall, creating breathtaking scenes that quickly spread across social media. Videos of the phenomenon have attracted millions of views online, with many viewers comparing the giant hole to a portal, vortex, or gateway to another world.

One of the most talked-about moments involved footage of a bird being swept into the spillway and later emerging downstream, sparking widespread debate among viewers about how it survived the journey.
Although the “Glory Hole” remains a major tourist attraction, California’s recurring drought conditions mean visitors rarely get the chance to see it in action. Even when the spillway is not overflowing, thousands of curious travelers visit Lake Berryessa each year to see the remarkable engineering marvel up close.
Today, the mysterious opening remains one of California’s most fascinating attractions, combining natural beauty, engineering innovation, and a touch of mystery that continues to capture imaginations worldwide.
