At the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), actress Queen Mary Atang drew major attention after appearing on the red carpet in a dress made from more than 500 loaves of bread.
The striking look was created by Nigerian designer Toyin Lawani, founder of Tiannahs Place Empire. According to reports from WWD, the outfit quickly went viral online, sparking discussions across social media about creativity, fashion, and wearable art.

Lawani explained that the project was designed as more than a red carpet outfit. She described it as a “wearable manifesto” combining branding, fashion, and performance art into one visual statement.
The original concept reportedly included around 350 loaves of bread, but additional pieces were later added during production, bringing the total to over 500. The structure used foam materials along with a mixture of flour, water, glue, paint, and resin to create the textured bread-like appearance while helping the dress maintain its shape.
The design was also connected to Atang’s dessert brand, Switcakes Desserts. Lawani said the outfit reflected her “wear your business” concept, where fashion visually represents a person’s profession or personal brand.
Part of the original presentation involved guests interacting with the dress by removing small bread pieces during the event. However, security restrictions reportedly prevented audience interaction on the red carpet.

Photos and videos of the outfit spread rapidly online, generating mixed reactions. Some viewers praised the creativity and originality behind the concept, while others questioned the practicality and use of food materials in fashion design.
Despite the debate, the look succeeded in attracting global attention to both the designer and the brand behind the concept. Lawani stated that projects like this help showcase the creativity of Nigeria’s fashion industry and demonstrate how African designers continue influencing global fashion trends.

Known for blending fashion, marketing, and theatrical presentation, Lawani has built a reputation for creating experimental designs that blur the line between clothing and performance art. The bread dress has now become one of the most talked-about celebrity fashion moments from the AMVCA awards.
