Little children are known for their natural friendliness and their eagerness to interact with just about everyone they meet, and that friendliness certainly isn’t limited to people.
They are often just as fascinated by animals and are more than happy to make new furry, feathered, or even rather unusual friends. Isaiah was no exception.
As children grow, they discover more and more about the world around them every day. On this particular day, Isaiah’s parents decided to take him to the zoo, where one of the residents would end up teaching him a delightful little lesson about friendship.
Staff members at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium later shared a video capturing the adorable moment when Isaiah met a baby gorilla named Kamoli. The little boy immediately loved being at the zoo.
After all, children are naturally curious about the world, and a zoo offers countless fascinating things to see, from colorful birds and playful monkeys to enormous animals that they may have only seen in books or on television.
When Isaiah saw a gorilla for the first time, he simply couldn’t hide his excitement. He let out the sweetest little giggle, clearly enchanted by what he was seeing. On the other side of the glass stood Kamoli, a young gorilla who was almost exactly the same size as the little boy.
Isaiah decided that simply looking at his new potential friend from a distance wasn’t enough. He wanted a closer introduction, so he walked right up to the glass.
Kamoli, apparently just as curious about his young visitor, immediately took an interest in Isaiah as well. And perhaps there was something familiar about the little boy. After all, humans and gorillas share many similarities.
Soon, the two were looking directly at one another through the glass. They studied each other carefully, from head to toe, as though each was trying to figure out exactly who this unusual new friend was. Kamoli seemed completely captivated by Isaiah and barely took his eyes off the boy.
In fact, the young gorilla became so absorbed in his new visitor that he appeared to forget all about his mother.
She was sitting peacefully on a branch of a nearby tree, keeping a watchful eye on her youngster while he investigated the fascinating little human standing on the other side of the glass.
Then something even more adorable happened.
The idea of playing a game of hide-and-seek seemed to come to Kamoli first. The baby gorilla suddenly ran behind a tree, disappearing from Isaiah’s view. Isaiah, apparently convinced that his new friend was simply playing along, quickly moved toward the other side of the tree, expecting to find Kamoli there.
But Kamoli was one step ahead of him.
As soon as the young gorilla realized that Isaiah had figured out where he was hiding, he immediately ran back in the opposite direction and disappeared from sight once again.
It seemed as though the two had invented their own little game, with each one trying to anticipate where the other would appear next.
Isaiah’s parents were standing nearby throughout the entire encounter, watching the unexpected friendship unfold. They couldn’t help but laugh as their son and the baby gorilla continued their playful exchange.
For Isaiah, it was clearly much more than just another visit to the zoo. He had discovered something fascinating and had seemingly made a new friend, even though that friend happened to live behind a large glass window and belonged to an entirely different species.
The encounter was so charming that zoo staff decided to share the footage with the public. The video captured the innocence and curiosity of both children, in their own very different ways. Isaiah was fascinated by Kamoli, while Kamoli appeared equally fascinated by Isaiah.
Neither seemed particularly concerned about their differences. They simply saw another young creature who was interesting, playful, and worth getting to know.
Eventually, after plenty of laughter and enough hide-and-seek for one afternoon, Isaiah’s parents decided it was time to continue their visit. They took their son and began walking away from the gorilla enclosure.
But Isaiah wasn’t going to leave without saying goodbye.
In an interview with The Columbus Dispatch, his mother explained that before leaving, her son made sure to say farewell to his new friend. His simple goodbye was perhaps the sweetest part of the entire encounter.
“Bye, gorilla,” Isaiah said.
It was a tiny farewell to a huge adventure, but the moment perfectly captured the innocence of childhood. For a few precious minutes, a little boy and a baby gorilla had looked at one another, played a spontaneous game of hide-and-seek, and seemed to form a connection without needing a single shared word.
Sometimes, friendship begins in the simplest possible way: with curiosity, a smile, and the decision to walk a little closer. For Isaiah and Kamoli, that was more than enough.
