There is something truly special and majestic about horses. Perhaps it has something to do with their graceful movements, or with the indescribable feeling you sometimes experience while riding, when the wind whistles past your ears and the ground seems to disappear beneath the pounding of hooves. Whatever the reason, humans and horses have long shared a deep and powerful bond built on trust, friendship, and affection.
In 2016, Ovidiu Rosu, a veterinarian with the FOUR PAWS team, experienced this connection firsthand when he helped free a horse from tightly fastened restraints. For his efforts, he was rewarded with an unexpected and heartfelt kiss from the grateful animal. It is comforting to know that there are people who are not afraid to approach even wild horses and who are willing to give them the love, care, and respect they deserve.

Fortunately, this touching incident was captured on video. Visitors to the Letea Biosphere Reserve, located in Romania’s Danube Delta, can encounter wild horses roaming freely across the area. According to The Guardian, around 4,000 of these animals live in the region. They are certainly worth seeing, as there are now very few places in Europe where these magnificent creatures can still wander freely in their natural surroundings.
However, the future of the wild horses in the Letea Reserve remains the subject of ongoing debate. Their population continues to grow, and some conservationists are concerned that this could eventually disturb the delicate balance of the local ecosystem. There is also another troubling problem: many local residents have reportedly treated these beautiful animals cruelly.
The Express reported the story of Ovidiu Rosu, the FOUR PAWS veterinarian who came across a wild horse in desperate need of help. During his work in the area, Rosu spotted a horse whose legs had been tied together, a practice that has reportedly been used in parts of Romania. Hobbles placed around a horse’s front legs can cause considerable pain, discomfort, and distress, while also severely restricting the animal’s ability to move.
Rosu could not simply walk away. He decided to help the horse escape from the restraints. From the very beginning, however, he understood that approaching a frightened wild horse could be extremely dangerous, both for himself and for the animal.
A terrified horse can injure itself while desperately trying to escape, especially when its legs are bound. It may panic, stumble, or even seriously hurt itself while struggling against the restraints. At the same time, a frightened and desperate horse can become unpredictable and may attack a person who comes too close. Even an experienced veterinarian has to approach such a situation with great care.
Rosu knew that he would only be able to help the animal if he could keep it calm. He therefore began by administering a tranquilizer. Once the horse had settled down, he quickly approached it and gently covered its eyes before beginning the delicate rescue operation, according to Express.

There was another horse nearby, watching the entire scene with obvious curiosity. As Rosu worked to free the restrained animal, the second horse gradually came closer, seemingly interested in what was happening to its companion.
When Rosu examined the horse more closely, he discovered that its legs were not simply tied with rope. They were tangled in a heavy chain. The circumstances suggested that someone may have been keeping the animal for fattening before slaughter, making the situation even more disturbing.
Fortunately, Rosu had a pair of cutting pliers with him. He began working carefully to remove the chain. He continued despite the increasingly difficult circumstances, paying little attention to the growing number of horses gathering around him. One by one, the curious animals appeared to approach the scene, as if they were watching the unusual rescue unfold.
Finally, after persistent effort, Rosu succeeded in cutting through the restraints. The horse was free.
Soon afterward, the animal began to recover from the effects of the tranquilizer. The FOUR PAWS team removed the blinders from its head and helped it regain its balance and stand on its feet again.
What happened next was perhaps the most touching part of the entire rescue.

The horse appeared to understand that it had been given back its freedom. After everything it had endured, the magnificent animal approached its rescuer and seemed to thank him in the most unexpected way possible: with a gentle, affectionate kiss.
For Rosu, it was a remarkable reward for his efforts. For everyone who witnessed the moment, it became a beautiful reminder of the extraordinary connection that can exist between humans and animals.
The story also highlights the difficult situation facing the wild horses of the Letea region. These animals represent one of Europe’s remaining populations of free-roaming horses, yet their survival and relationship with the surrounding ecosystem remain complicated. While their growing numbers raise legitimate conservation concerns, cruelty and mistreatment are problems that cannot simply be ignored.
Wild horses are powerful, intelligent, and highly sensitive animals. Their freedom comes with responsibilities for the people who share their environment. Finding a balance between protecting the ecosystem and protecting the animals themselves is not an easy task, but compassion should remain part of that conversation.
The rescue of this particular horse may have lasted only a short time, but its meaning was much greater. One person saw an animal in distress and chose not to look away. He understood the risks, approached carefully, and used his experience to give the horse another chance at freedom.
And perhaps the horse’s affectionate kiss was the perfect ending to the story.
It is heartening to remember that there are still people willing to devote their time, energy, and courage to helping animals in need. Even during the hardest times, there is still room in this world for kindness, compassion, and genuine love. Sometimes, all it takes is one person deciding that an animal’s suffering should not be ignored.
