A banana taped to a wall has once again become the center of international attention after the famous artwork mysteriously disappeared from a French museum.
The artwork, titled “Comedian,” was created in 2019 by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. The piece consists of a simple banana attached to a wall with duct tape, yet it has become one of the most talked-about works of conceptual art in the world.

According to reports, security staff at the Pompidou-Metz Center discovered on Saturday morning that the banana had vanished from the exhibition. Museum officials quickly alerted police, and an investigation was launched.
Fortunately, replacing the artwork was not difficult. Since the banana is considered a temporary component of the installation, museum staff restored the piece by attaching a fresh banana to the wall.
The unusual artwork has generated headlines several times over the years. Because bananas naturally spoil, they are routinely replaced. In some cases, visitors have even removed and eaten the fruit as part of highly publicized incidents.

One of the most famous moments occurred in 2024 when cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun ate a banana from the artwork after purchasing it at auction for millions of dollars.
The work continues to divide opinion among critics and art lovers. Some view it as a brilliant commentary on value and modern culture, while others dismiss it as a publicity stunt. Cattelan himself has described the project as a reflection on what society chooses to value.
Whether considered a masterpiece or a provocation, the banana artwork remains one of the most recognizable and controversial pieces of contemporary art.
