Netflix’s hit series Bridgerton is about to undergo a major change, and fans of the show may have to get used to seeing much less of one of its most beloved characters.
Nicola Coughlan, one of the series’ leading actresses, has revealed that she is stepping back and will have a reduced role in the upcoming fifth season.
The 39-year-old Irish actress, who plays Penelope Featherington and is also the secret writer behind London’s notorious gossip sheets, Lady Whistledown, admitted in an interview with E! News that she is saying goodbye to a larger part of the show with surprisingly mixed emotions.
“It’s a bittersweet moment,” Coughlan confessed. “I feel like, my God, I’ve had such an epic run. I think that’s the beauty of this world. It’s constantly transforming. Every season is a new story, and it takes on a completely different shape.”
For fans who have followed Penelope’s journey from the very beginning, Coughlan’s reduced involvement marks the end of an important chapter.

Penelope was initially introduced as a shy, socially awkward young woman living in the shadow of her more glamorous family members.
Over the course of the series, however, she gradually became one of the most complicated and influential characters in the Bridgerton universe.
Her biggest secret, of course, was her identity as Lady Whistledown.
Throughout the first seasons, Lady Whistledown’s sharp and often ruthless gossip columns provided the narration and helped drive many of the show’s most dramatic storylines.
Although the mysterious writer’s identity was hidden from most of London’s high society, viewers eventually discovered that the person behind the pen was none other than Penelope herself.
Her secret was finally exposed at the end of the third season, during the development of her romance with Colin Bridgerton, played by Luke Newton. Their relationship represented a major turning point for Penelope, who had spent years secretly in love with Colin while struggling to find her own confidence and voice.
The third season ended with Penelope stepping into a new phase of her life. She had not only won Colin’s heart, but had also been forced to confront the consequences of living a double life as an anonymous gossip columnist.
In the fourth season, Penelope faced the fallout from the revelation and the loss of her anonymity. Her life was no longer the same, and the woman who had once been able to observe London society from the shadows was suddenly forced to live openly with the consequences of her words.
Eventually, Penelope made a dramatic decision about her future. She chose to step away from her life as Lady Whistledown and focus on marriage and motherhood, closing the door on the identity that had defined so much of her story.

But just when it seemed that London might finally be free from the sharp pen of Lady Whistledown, the fourth-season finale introduced a new mystery.
A mysterious new gossip writer appeared in London, suggesting that the world of scandalous society news may be far from finished. The creators have deliberately kept the identity of this new figure secret, leaving viewers to speculate about who could possibly be hiding behind the new pen.
Interestingly, even Nicola Coughlan says she has no idea who the new gossip writer is.
According to the actress, the creators have intentionally kept the information away from her because they know she has a habit of revealing secrets. That means Coughlan is apparently in the same position as the audience: waiting to discover who is responsible for the latest wave of gossip.
“I don’t know who it is,” the actress admitted, emphasizing that the production team is keeping the mystery tightly under wraps.
Coughlan also does not yet know exactly how many episodes she will appear in during the fifth season, which is currently expected to arrive in 2027. Her role will reportedly be smaller, reflecting the fact that Penelope’s central romantic and personal storyline has already reached an important conclusion.
However, fans should not assume that this means they have seen the last of Penelope Featherington.
Coughlan made it clear that she would be willing to return whenever the showrunners wanted her back. In fact, she joked that she would even appear in the background if necessary.
“If they ask me to just be in the background, I’ll come,” she said. “No problem.”
That comment may offer some comfort to fans who have become attached to Penelope over the years. Although her role may be reduced, Coughlan clearly has no intention of completely closing the door on the Bridgerton universe.
Her comments also highlight one of the unusual strengths of the Netflix series. Unlike traditional television dramas, Bridgerton continually shifts its focus from one character or romantic pairing to another. Each season introduces a different central love story while allowing previous characters to remain part of the wider world.
That approach means that the departure of one central storyline does not necessarily mean the disappearance of its characters. Instead, familiar faces can return in smaller roles while new characters move into the spotlight.
And the fifth season is expected to bring a particularly significant new romance.
A New Love Story in Season 5
The upcoming fifth season is expected to focus on Lady Francesca Stirling, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, portrayed by Masali Baduza.
Their relationship is set to represent a historic development for the television franchise, as the pair will reportedly bring the first major same-sex love story to the Bridgerton universe.
The introduction of Francesca and Michaela has already generated considerable interest among viewers, particularly because it signals another major transformation for the series. As previous seasons have demonstrated, Bridgerton is willing to reinvent its characters and relationships while maintaining the glamorous world of Regency-era London.

For Penelope, meanwhile, the fifth season could represent a quieter chapter after years of secrets, romance, scandal and emotional upheaval.
Her journey from an overlooked young woman to the powerful voice of Lady Whistledown has been one of the show’s most dramatic transformations. She began as someone who rarely felt seen, yet ultimately became the person who could influence the entire social world of London with nothing more than a pen and a sheet of paper.
Now, with her identity revealed and her life taking a new direction, Penelope may finally be able to step away from the center of the drama.
But Bridgerton has never been a world where secrets stay buried for long.
With a mysterious new gossip writer emerging, a new romance taking center stage and several familiar characters potentially returning in smaller roles, the fifth season appears ready to open another chapter in the ever-changing world of the Bridgerton family.
And if Nicola Coughlan really does appear only briefly, fans may find themselves watching every scene involving Penelope with renewed attention. After all, in Bridgerton, even a character standing quietly in the background can still have a story worth telling.
