At first glance, this house looks completely ordinary. A modest, gray building that seems to belong to a middle-class family, freshly finished and quietly blending into the neighborhood. But appearances, as it turns out, are doing some serious acting here.
Just a few years ago, this same house was nearly abandoned. In 2017, it was purchased for a mere $12,000 by a man who would later become known online as The Homestead Craftsman.

The deal was made despite the loud objections of his friends, who were convinced he was throwing money into a crumbling pit. No one imagined that this risky purchase would soon turn into a full-blown internet success story.
When Craftsman first took ownership, the house was tiny. According to his video, the total area measured just 53 square meters.
The walls were made of cinder blocks, a small wooden porch clung to the front door, and several windows desperately needed replacement. From day one, the to-do list was overwhelming.

Fortunately, Craftsman had a plan.
He set out to transform the neglected structure into a comfortable, livable home, with the long-term goal of renting it out and recovering his investment. This is how he makes a living: buying rundown houses, restoring them with his own hands, and then selling or renting them.
The renovation began inside. All the old carpets were removed. Drywall partitions were torn down, yellowed wallpaper stripped away, and the walls thoroughly cleaned. Once that was done, it was time to tackle the kitchen.
The original wooden porch didn’t survive either. After the demolition phase, Craftsman covered the exposed cinder blocks that had once served as the facade. The porch was completely rebuilt, larger and far more attractive. Next came the roof, which required serious repairs, followed by the construction of a small rear porch that added charm to the backyard.

Inside, the house was in the worst condition. Almost everything needed to be rebuilt from scratch. Still, Craftsman pressed on without sparing time or effort. Eventually, new vinyl flooring was installed, dramatically transforming the interior and giving the once-ruined space a modern, clean look.
The entire renovation took nearly two years, but the result was worth every hour. By the end, the house was perfectly suited for a small family. When Craftsman’s friends finally saw the finished project, they could hardly believe their eyes. Even more astonishing was the fact that he had done all of it alone, without outside help.

Every step of the transformation was filmed and later uploaded to YouTube on a channel called Homemade Home. The video quickly went viral, gathering over 11 million views, 20,000 comments, and nearly 300,000 likes. Viewers around the world praised the dedication and hard work that turned a decaying building into a dream home.
In 2019, Craftsman listed the renovated house for rent at $600 per month. It took just two days to find tenants. According to him, the total cost of purchase and renovation came to around $30,000, a figure many still find hard to believe given the home’s original condition and its final appearance.

Although the house is now occupied, it will still take several years to fully recoup the investment once taxes and insurance are taken into account. Despite its small size, the home looks stunning. Some might even call it perfect. After all, there’s no shortage of people who appreciate compact living. The bedroom alone measures 3.5 by 4 meters, larger than the one in Craftsman’s own house.
The man known as The Homestead Craftsman has become a true internet phenomenon. He turned a $12,000 wreck into a nearly ideal home through patience, skill, and relentless effort. Two years of work paid off spectacularly, proving that with enough determination, even the most unlikely projects can come to life.
In May 2020, Craftsman released another video showing how the house looked after its first tenants had lived there, offering a final glimpse into the success of his remarkable transformation.
