A small grocery store in New Zealand has become an unexpected tourist attraction after discovering an extremely rare chimera apple that appears to be perfectly divided into two colors, with one half red and the other half yellow.
The unusual fruit was found in mid-May during the unloading of a shipment of Red Braeburn apples at a local market in the Christchurch suburb of Mairehau. Store staff immediately noticed the apple because of its striking appearance and nearly perfect color split.

Experts say chimera apples are exceptionally rare. The phenomenon occurs when a genetic mutation develops during the earliest stages of fruit growth. As a result, the apple forms from two distinct groups of cells with different genetic characteristics, creating a fruit that displays two separate color patterns in a single apple.
Since its discovery, the rare chimera apple has attracted curious visitors from across the area. Many customers stop by simply to see the unusual fruit for themselves, while others take photos and share them online.
Store owner Heather said the apple quickly became a local sensation.

“People come to see it, then tell their friends and family about it. Some don’t believe it exists until they see it with their own eyes,” she explained.
The rare fruit has even inspired local superstitions. According to Heather, some visitors now ask to touch the apple before entering competitions or buying lottery tickets, believing it may bring them good luck.
For now, the apple is being carefully stored in a refrigerator to slow the aging process. However, the store faces a difficult decision in the coming days. Owners must choose whether to preserve the unique fruit as a rare natural specimen or cut it open to reveal what the remarkable genetic anomaly looks like inside.
The discovery serves as a fascinating reminder that nature can still surprise us with extraordinary and unexpected creations.
