Sting: ‘Telling a child they never have to work is one of the worst mistakes a parent can make.’

Legendary musician Sting has once again made headlines after revealing that he does not plan to leave his children unlimited wealth.

The 74-year-old singer explained that while he continues to support his family, he believes giving children a life without responsibility can do more harm than good. During an interview with CBS News Sunday Morning, Sting shared that he wants his children to build successful lives through their own hard work.

‘I think the worst thing you can do for a child is tell them they never have to work,’ Sting said. ‘That can become damaging.’

According to the music icon, all of his children grew up understanding the value of discipline and independence. He explained that he intentionally encouraged a strong work ethic in the household instead of promising financial comfort forever.

‘My children all have incredible work ethics,’ Sting shared. ‘I pay for their education, they have what they need, but they also understand they must go out and work for their own future.’

The singer added that he does not see this approach as harsh parenting. Instead, he believes it is a sign of trust and respect toward his children’s abilities.

‘In my opinion, it’s not cruelty. It’s kindness. It’s believing they are capable of building their own lives,’ he explained.

This is not the first time Sting has spoken openly about inheritance. In earlier interviews, he admitted he does not want to leave behind massive trust funds because he believes too much inherited wealth can become a burden rather than a blessing.

Despite his views, Sting said he will always help his children if they truly need support. However, he hopes they continue creating their own paths and achievements independently.

Sting is the father of six children from two marriages, including Joe Sumner, Fuchsia Sumner, Mickey Sumner, Jake Sumner, Eliot Sumner, and Giacomo Sumner.
