Blogger Heather Barnes has sparked a heated debate online after admitting that she washes her carrots in a washing machine.
The social media star, known on Instagram as “Our Barnes Yard,” has built a following of nearly 300,000 people by sharing glimpses of her home and lifestyle. Barnes regularly posts home organization ideas, renovation tips, DIY projects, gardening content, and everyday tricks with her audience.
However, it was one of her latest kitchen-related hacks that left many of her followers completely baffled.
In a recent video, Barnes admitted that her method might sound “a little crazy,” but encouraged her followers to trust her. According to the lifestyle blogger, she has been using her washing machine to clean carrots grown in her own garden for years.
“I always wash my garden-grown carrots in the washing machine,” Barnes explained in the video. “I’ve been doing it for years.”
She then demonstrated exactly how she does it.

Barnes began by taking a large container filled with freshly harvested carrots that were still covered in soil. Instead of washing the vegetables under running water in the kitchen sink, she poured them directly into the drum of her washing machine.
Once the carrots were inside, she closed the machine door and selected a gentle cycle using cold water. She also made sure that the machine would not spin the vegetables at high speed.
“I just let them tumble,” she explained.
The unusual process quickly became the focus of the video as Barnes filmed the washing machine during the cycle. Partway through, she showed viewers what was happening inside before returning to the machine once the cycle had finished.
Then came the moment she appeared particularly pleased with.
“Boom,” Barnes announced as she opened the machine and revealed a handful of wet, freshly cleaned carrots.
The vegetables appeared significantly cleaner than they had been when they went into the machine, and Barnes seemed satisfied with the result.
She removed the carrots and placed them on her kitchen counter. Barnes also acknowledged that anyone attempting the method would need to think about what happens to the washing machine afterward.
She recommended running the washing machine empty and giving the drum a thorough cleaning before using it for laundry again.
At the end of the video, Barnes showed off her impressive harvest and prepared the carrots for storage. She also added a tongue-in-cheek disclaimer to the post.
“For legal purposes: only use your washing machine for its intended purpose,” she wrote. “I am not responsible if something goes wrong, haha.”
Despite her lighthearted approach, the unusual cleaning method immediately divided viewers.
Many people were shocked that Barnes had decided to put food directly inside an appliance normally used to wash clothes.

“What did I just watch?” one person commented.
“Please stop this immediately,” another user urged.
A third commenter took a humorous approach, joking that there was no way anyone could convince them the carrots would not end up tasting like laundry detergent.
“You will never convince me these carrots don’t taste like Tide Pods,” the commenter joked.
The flood of reactions eventually prompted Barnes to address the controversy again through her Instagram Stories.
She acknowledged that people online had become extremely concerned about the carrot-washing video and appeared somewhat amused by the reaction.
“People on the internet are very concerned about the carrot video. I’m so sorry,” Barnes said.
She also pushed back against suggestions that she had deliberately created the video simply to provoke outrage and generate engagement.
“People are saying this is rage bait,” she explained. “But this is just my life. This is how I live.”
Barnes insisted that she was not intentionally trying to provoke people or create controversy. At the same time, she encouraged those who had become angry over the video to take a step back.
“I’m not intentionally trying to provoke people,” she said. “But if you are angry right now or you have fallen victim to this rage bait, it’s time to take a few deep breaths.”
While some viewers treated the entire situation as an amusing example of the unusual things people share online, others raised more serious concerns about food safety.
Experts generally advise against washing food in appliances that are designed for clothing, particularly because washing machines can contain detergent residues, fabric softener residues, bacteria, and other contaminants that are not intended to come into contact with food.
Even if a washing machine appears clean, its internal surfaces and components are designed for laundry rather than food preparation. Detergents and other cleaning products can also leave behind chemical residues that may be difficult to remove completely.
There is also the issue of contamination. Washing machines routinely come into contact with dirty clothes, towels, cleaning cloths, and other materials that can carry bacteria and other microorganisms. Simply running a machine with cold water may not eliminate every potential contaminant.
For those reasons, food-safety experts recommend washing vegetables using methods specifically intended for food preparation, such as rinsing them thoroughly under clean running water and using a clean kitchen sink, bowl, or colander.

The carrot controversy is another example of how quickly an ordinary household habit can become an internet sensation. What Barnes described as a long-standing part of her everyday routine turned into a highly debated social media moment almost overnight.
Whether viewers saw the washing-machine method as clever, bizarre, or simply too risky, one thing was clear: the unusual carrot-cleaning hack certainly got people talking.
And in the endlessly unpredictable world of social media, a basket of muddy carrots and a washing machine were apparently all it took to start the next great internet debate.
